In 2001 a small group of ex-pats living in Sarasota, spear-headed by Sandra Cherry the owner of the “Tastefully British Tea Shop”, Bill and Jean Mason, Andy Reeves and Peter Gold felt with the increasing number of British families in Sarasota, a British Club was needed.
Our first President was Bill Mason, followed by Andy Reeves, then two years of Peter Richards, then Peter Gold, then Glenys Oldham, Nairn Gillet and now Terry Sweeney.
Some US born members have joined just because they have an interest in British culture, whilst the majority of our members are British born. We have experimented with venues and ideas for monthly meetings and discovered that most members want a purely social club. We do have an adjunct British Business Connections network which meets separately and members are free to attend if they wish to network.
Many current members have been members of the Club since its inception, and have seen many lifelong friendships formed through membership. Our social activities have included, barbecues, visits to the theatre, horse racing, polo club, wine tasting, quiz nights, pub crawls on the trolley bus, Chinese auctions, antique road shows, car rallies, car boot sales, and of course our annual Christmas Party.
Like most thing British we have found a good formula for a successful club and our numbers have grown from a small group of five families to our present size of over one hundred fifty.
