Here is a traditional South African dish. This is my niece’s recipe, and we enjoyed it very much while we were visiting there in 2001.

Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • ½ Medium Onion.
  • 2 Tbsp. Cooking Oil.
  • ½ lb. Minced Beef.
  • 2/3 Soft Breadcrumbs.
  • 1 Tsp. Curry Powder.
  • 2 Tsp. Sugar.
  • Salt and Pepper.
  • 1 Tsp. Turmeric.
  • 1 Tbsp. Vinegar.
  • ¼ Cup Raisins.
  • ½ Cup Milk
  • ½ Lemon
  • 1 Egg

Instructions
1. Heat oven to 350.
2. Chop onion finely, heat oil and sauté onion until golden brown.
3. Add meat and breadcrumbs and sauté.
4. Remove from stove; add curry, sugar, salt and pepper, turmeric, vinegar and raisins.
5. Mix well and place in a greased ovenproof dish.
6. Grate lemon rind and sprinkle over meat mixture.
7. Bake 30 minutes.
8. Beat egg and milk, pour over the bobotie and bake another 15 minutes.
9. Serve with yellow rice and chutney.
